After Trajan's death in 117 A.D., Caesar Publius Aelius Traianus Hadrianus Augustus, otherwise known as Hadrian, took reign as Emperor after endorsement by the Senate. Mere months after becoming Emperor, Hadrian lead several Roman legions into what is known as the Danube campaign in Southern Europe. Having signed a peace treaty and military alliance with the Parthian Empire in 121 A.D. The Parthians offered assistance with the protection of the Mesopotamia that Trajan conquered in return for exclusive access to Roman trade routes across Roman lands in Northern Africa and Western Europe.
